Gas dilution experiment for undergraduate

This paper presents a simple setup to investigate the continuous gas dilution process. The setup consists of vessels and an oxygen sensor. Two experiments have been conducted. First, by flowing nitrogen (N2) into a vessel containing ambient air, the oxygen (O2) concentration depletes following an exponential decay. The decay constant depends on the vessel's volume and the flow rate. Second, in a series of dilution, two vessels are connected. The first vessel (#1) contains ambient air, and the second (#2) contains N2. The flow of N2 through this setup will dilute the O2 that can be monitored in vessel #2. The pattern of this dilution is characterized by the volumes of both vessels and the flowrate. Finally, these simple experiments show a strong agreement between the calculated and measured quantity related to the dilution.
