Abstract The Gibbs energy of Formation data for crystalline hydrates, ΔGf(MpXq.nH2O, T/K, c) and the corresponding “parent” salt, ΔGf(MpXq, T/K, c) are related by the Thermodynamic Difference Rule (TDR): ΔGf(MpXq.nH2O, T/K, c)/kJ mol–1 ≈ΔGf(MpXq, T/K, c)/kJ mol–1 + [0.1994 (T/K) – 302.95] n which predicts values of either ΔGf(MpXq.nH2O, T/K, c) or ΔGf(MpXq, T/K, c) from known values of either ΔGf(MpXq, T/K, c) or ΔGf(MpXq.nH2O, T/K, c) respectively, usually to within experimental error and applies for the temperature range: 298.15 ≤ T/K ≤ 900.
