Enhancement in Visible Light Photoresponse of CdS Thin Films by Nitrocellulose Surface Passivation

Herein, we demonstrated a surface-passivated Ag/CdS/Ag photodetector device fabricated using nanocrystalline CdS thin films deposited via the spray pyrolysis method. Surface passivation with nitrocellulose enhances the photosensitivity by 26,000 times and reduces the rise/decay time substantially to 0.4/0.6 ms. The rise in photosensitivity and ultrafast photoresponse time of the nitrocellulose-coated photodetector, as compared with the uncoated photodetector (27 and 1.4 ms), are due to the suppression of the surface sulfur vacancy defects, thus increasing the concentration of photogenerated free carriers.
