Sonodynamic therapy of cancer using a novel TiO2-based nanoparticles

ABSTRACT

Ultrasound has the ability to be concentrated into a limited area of a tumor to activate a sonosensitizer. To develop the effectiveness of sonodynamic therapy of cancer utilizing sonosensitizers, we improved an innovative titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles functionalized porphyrin and discussed its features and sonotoxicity on tumor cells. Briefly, TiO2nanoparticle has been created by means of titanium tetrahydroperoxide precursor. The surface of TiOwas modified with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymer and subsequently with porphyrin. TEM, DLS, FTIR, and XRD were employed to examine the characteristics of samples. Cytotoxicity of the samples was determined using MTT assay test in vitro.The therapeutic effect of sonodynamic therapy (SDT) via TiO2-based nanoparticles on breast cancer were evaluatedin vitro using MDA-MB-231 cell line.The results of the MTT test indicate that TiO2 and the porphyrin-containing samples are non-toxic but in combination with ultrasound radiation are more effective in killing breast cancer cells.
