Self-assembly of a cholesteryl-derived diphenylalanine in ethylenediamine-water mixed medium

Abstract

An amphiphilic cholesteryl-derived diphenylalanine (Chol-FF) has been developed, which can emulsify the EDA/water (from 9-1 to 1-9, v/v) mixed solutions. External shaking or aging induced a transition of the Chol-FF EDA/water (9-1) system from emulsion to gel. Micron-sized fibers were observed in the gel system, and the formation was driven by the combination of intermolecular π-π stacking, hydrogen bonding, and van der Waals forces based on several spectroscopic studies. A lamellar packing mode was adopted by Chol-FF molecules in the gel. Moreover, the transition from emulsion to gel can be reversed by heating-cooling treatment due to the non-covalent driving nature.
