In 1920, the 37th volume of The Auk included 41 major articles. The lead was a memorial for William Brewster (1851–1919). It was followed by tributes to Brewster and Lyman Belding (1829–1917), and announcements of adoptions of memorials for Brewster. In the inaugural issue of the year, editor Witmer Stone placed a notice of a publication delay and a backlog of submissions, requested a Publication Fund and that authors provide their addresses with their names at the end of a manuscript, and clarified his choices in the content and organization of The Auk. Stone attributed the backlog to an “abundance of material on hand,” but it was probably also related to his decision that “in accepting papers a wide range of qualifications is considered, for it seems that everything that pertains to ornithology should have a place on the pages of ‘The Auk.’” The Publication Fund would offset the rising cost of paper and publishing and double the amount of literature published, reduce the backlog, and assure continuance of the journal.
