According to my files from many years ago, my first contact with Denis Lynn dates back to February 1974, when he sent me a letter with questions related to extrusomes in ciliates, the topic of my doctoral thesis. Denis was in the completion phase of his PhD thesis (Figure 1) and I had just started my first position as Assistant Professor at the University of Heidelberg. Later, Denis and I met from time to time on the occasion of international congresses of protozoology. Additionally, over the years we developed a lively correspondence about ciliatological problems. When in the early 1980s I began to think about editing a monograph with the title Ciliates: Cells as Organisms, the first colleague whom I approached with a request to compose a chapter on ciliate systematics was Denis. Without any hesitation, he agreed to be one of the 23 authors of this treatise. The result was a comprehensive, sophisticated, and up-to-date review on this topic (Lynn, 1996), of a high professional standard, as I had known from his publications that it would be. In 1986, when I took over the editorship of Protistologica, renamed by me to the European Journal of Protistology, I asked Denis to join the editorial board as one of four Associate Editors. He accepted my invitation readily and served in this position until 1991. During this period, we had an intensive editorial correspondence. His first extended visit to Germany (to my knowledge) was in the summer of 1993, when he spent a sabbatical at the University of T€ubingen, working in Prof. Dieter Ammermann’s lab, collaborating particularly with Dr. Martin Schlegel. During this time, he attended the IX International Congress of Protozoology organized by the German Society of Protozoology, held in Berlin. A couple of months later, he visited Berlin, together with his parents. All three Lynns stayed in our house for several days. A pictorial entry in our guestbook reminds us of this very enjoyable time together (Figure 2). Figure 1. Denis towards the end of his doctorate.
