This paper introduces the development of low‐pressure pipeline irrigation technology in China, including relevant technical standards. It illustrates closed, open and semi‐closed pipeline types and provides successful examples of application. It also presents popular pipeline materials, including PE, PVC‐U, PVC‐O, steel reinforced polyethylene and reinforced concrete, as well as their features and range of application. In addition, it discusses problems existing in low‐pressure pipeline irrigation schemes, such as pipeline damage caused by negative pressure, and pipeline blockage resulting from airlocks. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
