Use of ADVANTG to analyse skyshine γ-dose rates around a silo type LILW repository

Abstract MCNP and the ADVANTG code were used to analyse γ-dose rates for the future Slovenian LILW repository. Using ADVANTG’s variance reduction technique, different detailed calculations of γ-dose rates were achievable in a reasonable time, whereby the analogue MCNP simulations were accelerated up to 9500 times. We analysed the influence of different repository configurations on the annual γ-dose rates up to 150 m from the outer edge of the repository. The results show that, for all configurations of the open repository where the waste from different sources is deposited, the calculated annual γ-dose rates were lower than the prescribed limitation (20 mSv/year). By considering also the waste from the Krsko NPP, which represents the major contribution by activity and volume, the dose rates increased 698 times. By applying a 33 cm thick layer of the filling grout, the calculated dose rates dropped below the limitation.
