The fracture mechanism of W-Eurofer brazed joints was studied by in-situ SEM three-point bending tests using two different notched sample configurations. The objective of these tests was to analyze and understand the possible mechanical and fracture behavior of the joint during service life. The results showed that the mechanical behavior of this dissimilar brazed joint is very sensitive to defects on the tungsten side. When the notch is located in the tungsten base material, the stress concentration located in this material causes a fast crack propagation from the notch to W-braze interface, causing premature joint failure. However, when the notch is made in the Eurofer base material, the stronger Eurofer-braze interface and toughening behavior of the steel completely change the fracture mechanism, leading to improved mechanical behavior of the brazed joint.
