Separation of Levulinic Acid by Reaction with Tri-n-butylphosphate Diluted in Nontoxic Solvents

Separation of levulinic acid (LA) from the aqueous phase with the use of tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) as an extractant in nontoxic solvents such as rice bran and mustard oils was performed. The solvents are low cost and nontoxic as compared to other solvents. Separation of levulinic acid was obtained in maximum extraction efficiencies (%E) of 11.75%, 8%, and 70% in pure rice bran oil, mustard oil, and TBP, respectively. The distribution coefficient (KD) and %E were found to be lower in the vegetable oils. To improve the separation, TBP was used as an extractant with various concentrations in the mustard and rice bran oils. In the present study, higher KD and %E were obtained as 1.42 and 58.73% in rice bran oil and 1.61 and 61.75% in mustard oil.
