Parameters for Concentrations of Sows’ Gonadal Steroids in Predicting Inflammatory Processes in the Reproductive Tract

Abstract
The objective of the survey is to reveal the effects of a dysfunctional relationship between the gonadal steroids (progesterone and 17β-estradiol) on occurrence of inflammatory diseases (endometriosis and metritis-mastitis-agalactia) in sows in the postpartum period. The surveys were carried out with 27 sows at 106–107 days of gestation, measuring the concentrations of progesterone and 17β-estradiol on the seventh, fifth, third, and first days before the expected farrowing date and during parturition. The subsequent retrospective analysis of the results of the collected measurements was performed depending on the course of the postpartum period in sows. It was ascertained that the progesterone blood concentrations the 3 days before the farrowing date and during parturition in sows affected with postpartum diseases were higher by 48.7 (p < 0.01) and 31.1% (p < 0.05), respectively, than that in the animals that remained healthy after farrowing, while the estradiol concentrations were lower by 10.1 and 21.0%, respectively. In addition, progesterone-to-estradiol ratio variables were 1.6-fold (p < 0.01) and 1.7-fold (p < 0.01) higher, respectively. This allows for the consideration that a dysfunctional relationship between the hormones in sows at the end of gestation and during parturition can be one of the factors causing the pathological processes of an inflammatory type in the postpartum period. In addition, it is eligible to apply the progesterone-to-estradiol ratio as a criterion for predicting the risk for disease incidence.中文翻译:
