Production of Potassium Sulphate by Conversion of Phosphogipsum and Potassium Chloride in Ammonia Solution

Abstract

The possibility of obtaining potassium sulfate by converting calcium sulfate (phosphogypsum) and potassium chloride in an ammonia solution was investigated. The optimal conditions for the process at various concentrations of ammonia solution were determined. When using a 25% solution of NH3, the stirring time is 30–60 min, the consumption rate of KCl is 160% from stoichiometry. When using a 40% ammonia solution, the stirring time has practically no effect on the conversion, and the KCl consumption rate is only 120% from stoichiometry. The conversion temperature in both cases should be 15–20°C; the mass ratio of gypsum and ammonia should be 1 : (3–5).
