Structure, antioxidant and immunostimulatory activities of the polysaccharides from Sargassum carpophyllum

Two polysaccharides (SCP1 and SCP2) were isolated from Sargassum carpophyllum obtained in the South China Sea. SCP1 consisted of mannose, glucuronic acid, glucose and xylose in a molar ratio of 89.9:1.6:7.6:0.8, while SCP2 consisted of mannose, rhamnose, glucuronic acid, galacturonic acid and glucose in a molar ratio of 70.8:14:5.4:6.2:3.5. SCP1 contained the glycosidic linkages of →3)-α-D-Man(1→ and β-D-Xyl(1→, while SCP2 contained the linkages β-D-Man(1→ and →3)-β-D-GalA(1→. Both SCP1 and SCP2 expressed good antioxidant activity against O2radical dot, OHradical dot, DPPH radical and ABTS radical. SCP2 had better antioxidant activity. Meanwhile, the two polysaccharides exhibited excellent immunostimulatory activity. Compared with SCP1, SCP2 showed higher immunostimulatory activity due to its stronger function on promoting cytokine secretion (IL-2 and TNF-α) of macrophages. The results indicated that the polysaccharides from Sargassum carpophyllum have a potential to be a health-improving ingredient in functional food and pharmaceutical.
