In recent years genetics in relation to pregnancy has undergone a diagnostic revolution; many more diagnoses can be made before and during pregnancy, and this has led to what may well be coined personalized medicine for the embryo and the fetus. Previously invasive procedures may now be performed less invasively; for example, preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) offers opportunities for non-affected pregnancies without termination of pregnancy, and noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) can test for aneuploidies. Many of these procedures have developed in acknowledgement of free reproductive choices in many countries. In this special issue of AOGS we present a number of papers on PGT, NIPT and other genetic technologies.
