Order-disorder transition in Pentaerythritol using Raman scattering

Abstract High-temperature Raman spectroscopic study of order-disorder transition in Pentaerythritol [C(CH2OH)4] is reported. The changes in the Raman spectra with increasing temperature have been followed up to ≈503 K. We observe several changes in the spectra including merging of modes, appearance of new modes and sudden change in the slope of the frequency vs temperature curve at ≈ 452 K. In addition, sudden enormous broadening of almost all the modes are noted at ≈ 452 K indicating order-disorder transition of first order in nature. The transition has been found to be completely reversible.
