Jet formation and initiation study of double-layer shaped charge

ABSTRACT

The formation and initiation behaviors of double-layer shaped charge (DLSC) are investigated. The DLSC comprised an inner metal liner, coupled with an outer metal or polymer liner. The nonlinear dynamic analysis software Autodyn-2D is used to simulate and compare different kinds of liner material combination shaped charges. The effects of the impedance of materials on DLSC deformation are discussed. Acoustic impedance difference exerts a negligible effect on jet tip velocity. The simulation results showed that the high impedance difference material combination DLSC forms an excellent jet. Meanwhile, Chapman–Jouguest (C-J) detonation velocity and jet tip velocity cause an important effect on DLSC penetration and initiation. DLSC offers excellent penetration capability as tip velocity increased firstly and then decreased by increasing to the C-J detonation velocity. Moreover, compared with the conventional metal single copper jet initiating charge, the complete response time of target charge decreased at the same standoff by the suitable DLSC. Thus, DLSC can be used as a new kind of penetrator to initiate charges.
