Preparation and thermal performances of 1, 10-decanediol-stearic acid eutectic as phase change material

Abstract Stearic acid (SA)/1, 10-decanediol (DDL) binary eutectic was prepared via melt blending technique. The thermal performances of SA, DDL, and the SA-DDL binary mixtures were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). From the phase diagram, binary SA-DDL system showed eutectic behavior and SA percentage at eutectic point is located at 86 wt% in terms of melting point and the fusion enthalpy at 56.5 °C and 247.6 J/g, respectively. The accelerated thermal cycles tests illustrated the variations of the phase transition temperature and fusion enthalpy of the SA-DDL eutectic were in the range of 0.4–0.7 °C and 0.8%–1.5% after experiencing 100 and 500 thermal cycles. At the same time, FT-IR analysis indicated that the SA-DDL eutectic were chemically stable even experiencing 500 repeated thermal cycles. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) implied that SA-DDL eutectic was thermally stable below 200 °C. The results suggested that the SA-DDL eutectic was a potential candidate as a novel type phase change material.
