Flow patterns and pressure drop in the shell-and-plate heat exchangers

ABSTRACT Shell-and-plate heat exchangers have wide industrial applications for its excellent thermal performance with compact size, extensive temperature/pressure ratings and two-phase fluid flexibility. An in-depth study on the two-phase thermo-hydraulic behavior in the plate core is of utmost importance for its performance improvement. In this study, the flow patterns and pressure drop are experimentally investigated in a transparent circular plate with a corrugated sinusoidal shape. The flow patterns in both vertical downward flow and upward flow are defined respectively, i.e. bubbly flow, slug flow, film flow and churn flow in downward flow, while bubbly-slug flow, semi-film flow, film flow and churn flow in upward flow. By analyzing the relation between the two-phase multiplier and Lockhart-Martinelli parameter, a new correlation for the prediction of the frictional pressure drop is proposed.
