Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) regulate the spatial distribution of Lepidoptera insects in an orchard ecosystem

Abstract Non-host plants applied to crops are expected to repel searching adults and thereby to reduce egg laying in order to achieve pest management. In a field experiment, an increase in the number of herbivores adapting and ovipositing on non-host plants could reduce the potential for polycultures to control pests. We intercropped rows of apple trees with aromatic plants to examine effects of non-host plants on the distribution of Lyonetia prunifoliella (Hubner). We found a phenomenon that L. prunifoliella distributed over non-host plant in the second year, not in the first year. As distribution of L. prunifoliella changed to non-host plants, at the same time, its parasitic natural enemies increased due to intercropping with aromatic plants. Changes in single or blended volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from aromatic plants altered the distribution of Lepidoptera insects and parasitic wasps (Eulophidae and Anagyrus dactylopii) in canopy, which directly caused L. prunifoliella to transfer from apple trees to aromatic plants, stimulating the ability of adaptation (recognizing and experiencing) to non-host plants. Altering the habitat may be an effective addition to integrated pest management (IPM) strategies.
