Dear Editor, Recently, Yue et al. (2020) published the investigation of the association between polymorphisms in the TNF-α and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in a Chinese Han population. We read the article with great interest; however, we would like to suggest a comment to improve the interpretation of the study for readers. In Materials and Methods section, the authors stated that in the study, 759 participants of the Chinese Han population were recruited, including 327 who were as HCC patients and 432 individuals as healthy controls. Also, in Table 1, the demographic characteristics of the case and control subjects confirmed the number of participants in the research. Nevertheless, in Table 3, the total of the genotype distributions demonstrated the different sample sizes for case and control groups for each variant. It is expected that in cases when genotyping the samples are not evaluated due to technical errors, the exact number of the excluded samples to be mentioned, or the final sample size should be reported in Abstract and other sections. Insufficient reports for the genotyped samples can confuse readers and can make an invalid source for citations in future systematic reviews and meta-analysis.
