Molecular detection and first report of Cucumber mosaic virus infecting ‘Cavendish’ banana plants in Ethiopia

Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) is one of the most important viral pathogen limiting banana production globally. The aim of the present study was to test the presence of CMV infection in banana plants from Ethiopia. Dot immune-binding assay and RT-PCR of symptomatic leaves could detect CMV in 92% and 100% of the samples, respectively. Direct sequencing of the PCR product produced 292 bp long nucleotide sequence showing 96.23–96.58% sequence identity at nucleotide level with isolates from Serbia (KT270566), Italy (KU976469), and others confirming CMV infection. The phylogenetic tree constructed at nucleotide level with MEGA 7.0 program revealed that the isolate belongs to subgroup IA. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of CMV infecting banana plants from Ethiopia.
