Arctic polar vortex dynamics during winter 2006/2007

Stratospheric ozone depletion over the Arctic is not regular, unlike Antarctic ozone holes, and is determined by the dynamics of the polar vortex. Under the conditions of the strong polar vortex, in the presence of polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs), the catalytic cycles of ozone destruction occur with the appearance of solar radiation over the polar region. If the vortex breakdown occurs in late winter under the influence of planetary waves, the polar region is filled with warm, ozone-rich air masses. In the winter 2006/2007, the total melting of PSCs was observed on 2 January and occurred after the polar vortex weakening, at which values of zonal and meridional winds were less than 20 m/s during a little more than 3 h on a small section of the vortex edge. Such a local weakening of the vortex edge led to the short-term decrease of the dynamic barrier and a subsequent increase of temperature inside the vortex.
