‘Publish or Perish’ is a well-known aphorism within the academic community; every Ph.D. student undergoes a moment of realisation that their academic career is dependent on their publication output. The pressure continues with post-doctoral researchers seeking the paper that will propel them towards their next position and faculty members knowing that tenure or promotion is dependent on a strong research output, often assessed using crude publication metrics. But is that really why we publish our research outputs—to reinforce a system that most recognise as being inherently flawed? Is that why so many young, and less young, scientists work ridiculous hours, tolerate poor contracts and make personal sacrifices to pursue their research ambitions? Of course not! Publishing the outcomes of experiments is intrinsic to scientific endeavour and is the basis by which science benefits society. It allows the scientific community to work as a collective, sharing insights and enables science to progress at a more rapid pace. The full spectrum of what we publish—positive and negative results; corroborating and conflicting data; valid and flawed hypotheses and models—advances knowledge, thus contributing to a fundamental goal of science. With knowledge comes enlightenment, which, given the challenges facing society, is a commodity that is as valuable as ever.
