Our birds will be ok, they’ve evolved to cope with fire…haven’t they?

Recent catastrophic fires in Australia, the Amazon and the USA, along with insights from climate science, indicate the frequency of large-scale wildfires has increased, and will continue to increase, globally. Fire is a major global conservation challenge, particularly in ecosystems where fire has historically been rare or absent for long periods (e.g. rainforests), but also increasingly in landscapes where fire is more frequent. Although changed fire regimes have long been recognised as a threat to many Australian birds, in most national parks and reserves in Australia an information board or brochure reassures visitors not to be disturbed by the blackened landscapes they see, as our wildlife has evolved to cope with fire. However, as fires become larger, more frequent and more severe, there is no room for complacency and wishful thinking as we consider the magnitude of the challenge posed to birdlife by changing fire regimes. Impacts of a fire regime extend beyond that of just the loss of resources due to themost recent fire. Whether or not a species will find the resources necessary to persist in a landscape after fire will depend on at least five key attributes of the fire regime:
