ABSTRACT The low accessibility of information regarding the design and construction phases and the current state of the buildings is the main cause of inefficient actions on existing buildings. The lack of ‘as built’ documentation and the complex task of detecting their current status in terms of use and maintenance cause deep difficulties in planning appropriate interventions. This paper shows the findings of a research aimed at testing the integrated use of BIM and 3D GIS in order to structure knowledge. The work led to the development of a BIM-3D GIS workflow that was tested on two case studies in Italy. .
