Efficacy of Purpureocillium lilacinum in combination with chitosan for the control of Meloidogyne javanica

ABSTRACT The nematicidal effect of Purpureocillium lilacinum strain 251 and a formulated product containing chitosan was recorded against second stage juveniles (J2s) and eggs of Meloidogyne javanica. There was a significant gradual decrease in the number of J2s survival as the chitosan concentration increased. The survival of J2s and hatching of eggs of Meloidogyne javanica were influenced by the presence of chitosan at different concentrations. However increase of P. lilacinum concentration from 1 × 106 to 3 × 106 conidia g−1 soil did not significantly reduce J2s survival in the treated soil. There was a clear interaction effect between P. lilacinum and chitosan 14 days after inoculation of soil with J2s. This was not obvious when the incubation time was prolonged to 21 days. When the soil was inoculated with eggs, there was an interaction effect only in one experiment 14 days after inoculation. Higher level of infection of root-knot nematodes by P. lilacinum was evident after applying glucose in either sterilised or non-sterilised soil.
