Atlas of Salivary Gland pathology

This new atlas from Springer should more appropriately be called ‘Atlas of Salivary Gland Surgical Pathology’ as it is more geared towards surgical pathologists who are involved in the everyday evaluation of salivary gland resection specimens, especially for epithelial tumors. The book has five contributors and is divided into twentyeight chapters. Five chapters deal with general aspects of the evaluation of salivary gland specimens both grossly and microscopically. The first two chapters deal with normal gross andmicroscopic anatomyof the parotid, submandibular and sublingual glands. The next three chapters show intraoperative, gross andmicroscopic features of pathological specimens. The remaining 23 chapters cover twenty-three benign and malignant salivary gland tumors in alphabetical order from acinic cell carcinoma toWarthin tumor. All these chapters have a standard format with description of demographic features for each entity followed by a very brief description of architectural and cytology features. Twenty to forty-five photomicrographs of each of these entities were then included going from low power architectural to high power cytological details. Commonly used immunohistochemical assays and fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH) studies are also included where applicable. Each of these chapters then end with a bibliography including a selection of the most seminal studies for each of these entities. This atlas overall is very handy and useful for surgical pathologists, ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeons and oncologists involved in the care of patients with salivary gland tumors. The text is very brief and succinct. The illustrations are for the most part excellent and well-conceived. The newest (2016/2017) World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Salivary Gland Tumours [1] is used throughout, and the bibliography is up-to-date. The e-book with the entire text and photomicrographs is available as PDF and EPUB versions from the Springer site. Hyperlinks were provided in the beginning contents section for the chapters, and there is an additional hyperlink for the photomicrograph section at the beginning of each chapter, allowing for easy navigation. There are a few things the authors may want to consider for the next edition of this otherwise excellent atlas. The photographs for the FISH studies could be better annotated to indicate the different markers involved. The text also could be expanded to include the differential diagnosis (‘D’) in the A (architecture), B (biphasic), C (cytology) and D of salivary gland neoplasms. In the e-book version, hyperlinks also may be useful in the index section and for some of the more important references. Sections of non-neoplastic and non-epithelial such as lymphoid lesions also would be useful additions. Overall, this is an excellent and useful atlas for day-today evaluation of salivary gland neoplasms, and the authors did a very good job to demystify this challenging area of surgical pathology.
