An investigation into the influence of outdoor environmental education courses on the environmental attitude and behaviours of malaysian participants: a life history approach

This thesis explores the influences of Residential Outdoor Environmental Education (ROEE) courses on participants’ environmental attitudes and behaviours. To date, research in this area has tended to adopt psychological and sociological perspectives separately. Drawing on the literature on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Dewey’s concept of continuity of experience, this study addressed also investigate how participants’ life experiences following the ROEE courses shape their subsequent environmental attitudes and behaviours, from both perspectives. Data were collected through documentary analysis, online survey, and two phases of semistructured interviews: an initial exploratory interview and then an extended interview, with eleven participants. All participants had attended Malaysian ROEE courses during either their primary or secondary education. Research data were analysed in two ways. Framed by the Transtheoretical Model (TTM), the first analysis explored the participants’ journeys, over time, within their individual personal life histories. The second is a thematic analysis within individual accounts and across the whole set of interview transcripts. Key findings revealed that the ROEE courses were effective when the intervention encouraged appropriate processes of change according to the participants’ current stage of change when they attended the course. However, the courses cannot be characterised as significant enough to change the participants’ environmental attitudes and behaviour. It is arguable that the underlying problems of ROEE courses in Malaysia stem from inconsistencies between theory and practice. While theories suggest that ROEEs should encourage continuity of experiences and adopt biospheric-oriented and transformative approaches, evidence of these are all but absent in research data. The most enduring environmental behaviour changes for all the participants occurred later in life through experiences that involve changes in personal identity (PI), and social identity (SI). Influenced by PI and SI, the participants performed pro-environmental actions within the following perspectives: conforming/transforming action, compulsory/optional action, direct/indirect action, public/private-sphere action, activist/non-activist action, and biospheric/anthropocentric
