Radiation-induced Bismuth nanoparticles and its possible use as radiation dosimeter

ABSTRACT Liquid dosimeter of Bismuth nanoparticles (BiNPs) with a diameter ranged from 5 to 9 nm were synthesized by gamma Co-60 rays irradiation of Bi(NO3)3·5H2O/glycerol solution with various concentrations between 3.4 × 10−3 and 0.014 m/L. The BiNPs were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy spectrum and transmission electron microscope (TEM) images. BiNPs exhibit a Plasmon resonance absorption band at 288 nm. The intensity of this band increases with the increase of absorbed doses up to 20 kGy without any additives; the dose range in the presence of ascorbic acid was up to 1.5 kGy as a result of chemical reduction of Bi3+ to Bi0. The effect of ascorbic acid (as reducing agent additive) to Bi(NO3)3·5H2O/glycerol solution was investigated. The results confirmed that the second prepared dosimeter with the addition of ascorbic acid is more sensitive than the dosimeter without addition, these results shown obviously from the dose range of the two dosimeters. In addition, all dosimetric characteristics of BiNPs were studied.
