The importance of using leading and lagging metrics to drive improvement in process safety performance at complex process facilities has been well documented. Organizations are challenged to develop an appropriate set of metrics that will provide a holistic view of process safety management system health to allow for corrective action against poor performance. This article will share a new complex process facility's journey in establishing leading and lagging metrics, the metric review cycle applied to drive improvement, and examples of these improvements.
