Surface Characteristics and High-Temperature Wear of Plasma Nitrided Layer on Steel H13

The nitride layer obtained by low-temperature plasma nitriding on the surface of steel H13 used to produce hot-forming tools is studied. The structure of the surface layers is investigated by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, x-ray diffractometry, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The roughness of the surface and the strength of bonding of the coating are determined. The nitrided steel is tested for wear resistance at 460, 500 and 540°C. The wear mechanisms are determined.
