Influence of temperature on the microstructure and physical properties of corundum refractory brick in the blast furnace hearth

ABSTRACT The influence of temperature on the microstructure and physical properties of corundum refractory for blast furnace are investigated by a high-temperature test. The results show mullite and glass phases are generated by the in situ reaction in the matrix of corundum brick under high temperature. With the increase in temperature, the net structure is gradually formed in the matrix, and the multi-porous entirety is finally formed in the matrix at 1500°C. The cold compressive strength of corundum sample increases first and then decreases with the increase in temperature. The flexural strength of corundum sample is the highest at 1150°C, while with further increasing of temperature, the flexural strength of corundum sample decreases. The apparent porosity of corundum sample is the lowest at room temperature, but the apparent porosity of corundum sample fluctuates within the same level after the temperature exceeded 1150°C.
