Mountain goat nanny on the lookout. Photo by Frédéric Dulude‐de Broin. Predation is a major cause of mortality for many ungulate species, but whether natural variation of predation risk can impact other demographic traits such as reproduction is still up for debate. Based on long‐term environmental, demographic and physiological data, Dulude‐de Broin et al.'s study provides robust evidence that predation risk negatively impacts reproduction in mountain goats through chronic elevation of physiological stress. See paper by Dulude‐de Broin, F., Hamel, S., Mastromonacco, G.F. & Côté, S.D. Predation risk and mountain goat reproduction: Evidence for stressinduced breeding suppression in a wild ungulate. Funct.
