First indigenously developed polarimetric C-band Doppler weather radar in India and its first hand validation results

ABSTRACT As a first of its kind in India, indigenous development of dual-polarization C-Band Doppler weather radar (DWR) is discussed in the manuscript. Radar Development Area (RDA) of ISRO Telemetry Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) have developed the system and the DWR is installed at Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launch Station (TERLS) of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) which is a centre of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in the Kerala state of India. Till now, the DWRs available in India were either imported or were working on single polarization. The purpose of this DWR is to establish the technology based on polarimetric observation for meteorological and hydrological applications like intense weather monitoring and cyclone detection. The current paper mainly aims to show the DWR system-level details and the calibration approaches adopted. Some first cut data validation results are also presented for various events captured by the DWR.
