Performance analysis of demolition waste bricks for phosphorus removal from stormwater runoff

Construction and demolition (C&D) waste generated in the process of urban development has rapidly increased in recent years around the world in large quantities without proper reuse, resulting in negative environmental impact. Adsorption experiments were carried out by using red brick, burn-free brick and concrete brick, respectively. Results indicated that the hydraulic conductivity was influenced by the waste bricks type. And phosphorus removal increased with increasing initial aqueous phosphorus concentrations and the contacting time. While it decreased with co-exist anions (such as SO42-, Cl, NO3 and HCO3), and no evident variation was found for the adsorption capacity of phosphorus for the three kinds of waste bricks while the solution pH ranged from 5 to 9. Thus, we can conclude that demolition waste bricks showed a great application potential as infiltration system geomedia in terms of hydraulic conductivity and phosphorus adsorption.
