Modification of tools for wood based materials machining with TiAlN/a-CN coating

This study is focused on the usage of anti-wear layers based on carbon with the aim of improving the tool durability of sintered carbides composed of tungsten grains with cobalt as a binder (WC-Co) for wood-based material machining. The tested coating consists of a bottom TiAlN sublayer and a-CN top surface layer containing nitrogen-doped carbon. A TiAlN/a-CN double layer is deposited in an industrial DC magnetron sputtering system. The layers prepared in this way are examined with scratch and microhardness tests, as well as chemical analysis, in order to obtain the chemical composition of the coatings.. The standard exchangeable cutting blades made of sintered carbide are used in machining tests conducted on a CNC working centre. The machining properties of the double TiAlN/a-CN layer are shown to be superior in comparison to the standard tool.
