EHD gas pumping – A concise review of recent development

Abstract Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) gas pumps have received considerable attention in recent years for their salient features which include simple configuration, quiet operation, and efficient use of energy. EHD gas pumps can be used in a variety of applications from simple flow delivery, thermal management, drying enhancement, to plasma medicine. Since each application has its own requirements, different emphases have been placed on the design of electrodes for that particular application. In this paper, recent development on EHD gas pumps is reviewed on three specific fronts: flow delivery/sustainability, flow acceleration, and flow stability. Discussion includes new electrode configurations proposed, single-/multiple-stages systems developed, as well as criteria suggested for the evaluation of their performance. Based on the review, conclusions which have important implications for the practical use of EHD gas pump can be drawn.
