Fifth Generation (5G) communication systems will accommodate various kinds of data. There are two important problems in the 5G protocol, which have not been studied in depth. The first problem is the co-existence of heterogeneous communication standards; the second issue is to fuse information from different sources, for example, in cognitive communications. A new coding scheme, namely pattern exclusive codes (PECs), is proposed in this paper to resolve these two problems by inserting specific patterns (designated substrings) within data payloads to combine or fuse information streams from different sources. These patterns can be deemed as the frame cursors to mark the beginning and the end of a data string such that the frame-length field in a regular packet can be removed thereby. With the help of our proposed PECs, the packetless data transmission is feasible in the 5G communications. Moreover, the patterns can also serve as the identification sequences for users. Finally, crucial communication-performance related metrics regarding PECs, including peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR) and coding efficiency, are investigated in this paper.
