Phomopsis rot caused by Diaporthe infecunda on fruit and flowers of Passiflora edulis in Brazil

Diaporthe (syn. Phomopsis) species have often been reported as plant pathogens, endophytes or saprobes, commonly isolated from a wide range of hosts. In Brazil, in orchards located in Monte Azul, Minas Gerais, flowers and unripe fruits of Passiflora edulis were found with very severe and typical Phomopsis rot symptoms. The aim of this study was to prove the pathogenicity of the fungus isolated from symptomatic flowers and fruits, and to identify the pathogen’s species. The isolate was identified on the basis of DNA sequence analyses based on the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region and part of the translation elongation factor-1α. On culture media the colonies were sterile and pycnidia appear only on the surface of fruits. The first symptoms of the disease appeared 5 days after inoculation in flowers and after 11 days in ripe and unripe fruits inoculated at wounded sites. The pathogen was identified as Diaporthe infecunda and was re-isolated from those lesions, confirming Koch’s postulates. D. infecunda has been reported only as plant endophytic fungus and to our knowledge, this is the first confirmed report as a plant pathogenic fungus, causing rot in flowers and, in ripe and unripe fruits of P. edulis in the world.
