Traits and parameters of life history (distribution, abundance, age, growth, mortality, reproduction, spawning, maturity and recruitment) are important in ecology and fisheries (Stearns, 1992; Begg, 2005). For fisheries management, the study of growth provides a useful measure of stocks. Growth is often quantified in terms of body size as a function of age (Sparre & Venema, 1998), with length and weight as a function of time (Schnute, 1981) or age (Haddon, 2011) being particularly widely used.
