Abstract The concept of cycle energy ( C E ) was introduced in the chemical literature as early as in the 1970s. In this paper, three theorems are proven, showing the dependence of C E on the size of the corresponding cycle. Cycles of size 4 r + 2 and 2 r + 1 increase C E , whereas cycles of size 4 r decrease C E . Some generalizations of these results are also offered.
