Entangled mucins of the intestinal mucus layer hinder the mobility of nanoparticles via different physical and chemical interactions. Zwitterionic micelles contain a balanced distribution of positive and negative charges on their surface, which minimizes the possibility of interactions with the mucins. These micelles can therefore reach the underlying epithelial cells potentially deliver therapeutic cargo. More information can be found in the Communication by Brigitte Städler et al.
