Dr Mariana F. Wolfner is the Goldwin Smith Professor of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Cornell University. After finishing her undergraduate studies at Cornell University in 1974, she went to Stanford University to pursue her PhD with Dr David Hogness. Following postdoc training in Bruce Baker’s lab at the University of California, San Diego, she joined the faculty at Cornell University in 1983. Over the past 37 years, Dr Wolfner has investigated two important topics in Reproductive Biology—the physiological functions of seminal fluid proteins and the egg to embryo transition. Her lab has identified over 200 seminal fluid proteins and characterized their physiological functions in Drosophila using a wide variety of molecular biological and genetic technologies. Her lab discovered that seminal proteins are essential for fertility and that they play important roles in chemical communication between animals in reproduction and behavior, as well as in evolutionary phenomena such as sexual selection and “arms races.” Her work on the egg to embryo transition has also unveiled many fundamental mechanisms, including calcium influx during egg activation, protein phosphorylation, and mRNA polyadenylation and stability control immediately after egg activation. Dr Wolfner has published ~200 original research articles, reviews, and book chapters, and she is a frequent invited speaker at meetings and conferences. Her prolific career has been recognized by numerous awards, her election as an AAAS Fellow in 2006 and her induction into the National Academy of Sciences in 2019. With great interest and respect, I interviewed Dr. Wolfner.

Mariana Wolfner
