Recounts the career and contributions of radio astronomer Prof. (Dame) Jocelyn Bell. Bell Burnell, born in Northern Ireland, went to the University of Cambridge in 1965 to pursue a Ph.D. degree in astronomy under Prof. Anthony Hewish. There she spent two years setting up more than 1,000 posts and hanging some 2,000 dipole antennas interconnected with 120 mi of wiring to build a new radio telescope. It covered an area of 4.5 acres. Her discovery of the first pulsar was immediately recognized as a monumental achievement. By 1968, dozens of pulsars had been catalogued, and now more than 1,000 are known. Bell Burnell finished her Ph.D. degree in 1969. Discusses the fact that Burnell was never award the Nobel Prize for her efforts. Notes that in 2018, Burnell was awarded a US$3 million Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics.
