Streamer discharge initiation from an isolated spherical hydrometeor at subbreakdown condition

Abstract An isolated conducting sphere with rigid interface is used to model a water droplet, in order to investigate initiation process of streamer from a realistic hydrometeor. The method of image charge can then be adopted to calculate the electric field due to the space charge and its induced charge on the sphere. Numerical simulations show that initiation of negative streamers does not occur, but a steady corona discharge takes place around one tip of the sphere. This work provides a feasible method to study streamer initiation from real hydrometeors with rigid interface, and helps advance the initiation theory of lightning.
