Manic-depressive illness has too often been outshined by Bipolar Disorders (BD). Young psychiatrists risk forgetting the tight link between mania and depression and regard the two poles of illness as separate entities. This approach is unsupported by historical and psychopathological standpoints. Malhi's and colleagues recently proposed ACE (Activity, Cognition and Emotion) model, which is based on Weygandt's and Kraepelin's observations (1), encourages the framing of BD in a larger perspective.
