Flotation production of vitrinite maceral concentrate and its optimization using response surface approach

In this paper, an attempt is made to recover vitrinite-rich fraction coal using batch flotation operation. Three important operational variables, viz. collector dose (kg/ton), frother dose (kg/ton), and feed solid concentration, (%) have been changed according to Box–Behnken factorial design and their effect on the response parameter like yield, ash, and vitrinite maceral recovery (vmr) percent has been evaluated. For understanding the influence of interactional effects, response surface methodology (rsm) approach has been adopted. From 69.23 to 99.98 of volume percentage of vitrinite maceral is recovered, when the flotation test is performed without addition of collector with frother level maintained at 0.75 kg/ton of coal keeping feed solid concentration fixed at 5% solid by weight. High value of R2 greater than 90% is obtained for model equations of yield, ash, and vmr. Minitab 16.0 statistical software was used for data analysis.
