New species of webspinners (Insecta: Embiodea) from mid-Cretaceous amber of northern Myanmar

Abstract Three new species of webspinners (Embiodea) are described in two new genera, all preserved in Upper Cretaceous amber from northern Myanmar. Henoclothoda simplex Cui and Engel, gen. et sp. nov., Gnethoda symmetrica Cui and Engel, gen. et sp. nov., and Gnethoda ancyla Cui and Engel, gen. et sp. nov., are described in the family Clothodidae owing to their simplified male terminalia, in which the sclerites are generally symmetrical and the tenth tergum is undivided. Genus Gnethoda Cui and Engel, gen. nov., is assigned to a new subfamily, Gnethodinae Cui and Engel, subfam. nov., based on its simplified medial system, unlike all other clothodids. However, the polarity of this character needs to be clarified by expanded cladistic analyses of the order in future studies. In addition, two Peruvian species of Clothodinae are transferred to the genus Nonaia Engel, gen. nov. The new fossil species enrich the diversity of Embiodea in Cretaceous amber and further exploration is needed to better resolve our understanding of evolution in this order of insects.
