Recent advances of metal nanoclusters for aerobic oxidation

Ultrasmall metal nanoparticles with the particle size less than 2 nm exhibit quantum-sized electronic structures and size-dependent reaction activities, and they are known as metal nanoclusters (NCs), which are quite different from the single atom and metal nanoparticles. Aerobic oxidation is a green pathway for CO oxidation, alcohol oxidation, hydrocarbon oxidation, photooxidation, and so on. The resistance to oxidation and sintering is required for the metal-based catalysts during the oxidation progresses. The investigation of active catalysts in aerobic oxidation has inspired a guiding route for the preparation of efficient metal NCs. This review introduces recent progresses of metal NCs in aerobic oxidation. We focus on the relationship of size and electronic property of the metal NC core and the stabilized ligand and support with catalytic oxidation. The correlation and the developed strategies in maintaining efficient oxidation can be beneficial for their applications in the industry.
